| The Sprayed Polyurethane Foam Roofing Story Spray Polyurethane Foam, commonly referred to as SPF, is a spray-applied insulating foam plastic that is installed as a liquid and then expands many times its original volume. SPF can be applied to Asphalt roofs, Flat roofs, low slope roofs, stone and gravel roofs. SPF formulas can be tweaked to have many different physical properties depending on the use desired. For example, the same basic raw materials can make an insulation foam that is semi-rigid and soft to the touch, also create a high density roofing foam that is resistant to foot traffic and water. Specialized equipment is used to apply the SPF and proper technical training is important in order to get the best results. SPF is the king of building material multi-tasking. In insulation, it can provide high levels of R-value, while providing air barriers and assistance in moisture control in buildings. In roofing, it insulates and eliminates thermal bridging through fasteners or gaps in decking, while providing a long-lasting roofing system that has a life that can be extended by re-coating an average of 15 years. As a result SPF is used in a wide variety of applications including (but not limited to): roofing, air barriers, commercial and residential insulation in walls, ceilings, attics and basements, industrial insulation such as pipes and tanks, cold storage facilities, freezers, walk-in coolers, climate controlled buildings such as mushroom farms or produce storage, clean rooms, flotation for boats, ships, barges, floating docks, and much more. Higher density SPF systems have even been used to increase the structural strength of wings in airplanes. So what is SPF? It's a remarkably versatile material that provides proven solutions to a great range of challenges in the construction and manufacturing industries Where can I use an SPF roofing system? SPF has excellent adhesion to a variety of substrates including, asphalt roofing, clay and concrete tile, shingles, metal, wood and concrete. Since they add little weight and can be applied in varying thickness to add slope and fill in low areas. SPF roofing systems are often used as recover system over existing roof coverings. SPF roofing systems excel where: • Additional insulation is desired. • The roof substrate has many penetrations; • The roof deck is an unusual shape or configuration; • The roof is in a severe weather environment, (hurricanes, hail, etc.) • Lightweight materials are required. • Slope must be added to provide positive drainage • It is desirable to keep existing roof covering Cool Roofing ENERGY STAR (DOE) qualified cool roof coating products reduce the amount of air conditioning needed in buildings, and can reduce energy bills by up to 50%. The Cool Roof Program defines certain standards for solar reflectance, 3-year aged maintenance of reflectivity, and emissivity in roof coating systems. Reflectivity is the percentage of the sun’s heat a roof keeps off a building, and emissivity is the percentage of heat a roof lets out of a building. Lighter colored (white) roof coatings reflect the suns heat and UV rays and often lower the temperature of the roof by up to 100° degrees F. The most common cool roof coatings used over sprayed polyurethane foam (SPF) and other roof deck surfaces are light/white colored. The most common types are: • Acrylic • Silicone • Urethanes • Polyurea During warmer summer months, temperatures can reach 170° degrees F on a low-slope black asphalt roof, and they can drop to -20° degrees F during the winter in northern and higher elevated regions. Much of the heat generated by absorbing the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation transfers to the building interior, and can have significant adverse effects on energy consumption. Watch a 13 minute video showing the advantages of a Sprayed Polyurethane Foam Roof Coating System Save Money by re-sealing your existing roof instead of re-roofing. Our Six step roof repair system will cost up to 50% less than conventional re-roofing methods and last longer. SPF (sprayed polyurethane foam) roof repair is waterproof and seamless. The finished roof repair system is guaranteed in writing for 12 years and the guarantee is renewable indefinitely. Spf roof repair systems all over the southern US are 40 and 50 years old and going strong. Flat Roofs are of the biggest headaches for property managers, any leak will be sure to cause major damage to crawl spaces and ceilings. Flat roofs that are constructed of asphalt and stone are one of the hardest roof types to patch there is. Flat roofs are usually made of built-up tar paper and a hot asphalt coating as a water repellent and covered with gravel or crushed stone aggregate. When doing patching you can never seem to get a clean surface to seal to, the leaks always come back. Flat roofs are vacuumed and primed before the seamless Polyurethane coating is sprayed on the primed surface. Rubber roofs are one of the best roof systems but also one of the most expensive. Most people think rubber roofs are maintenance free but that’s not true, rubber roofs require cleaning and special attention to seams to maintain a waterproof seal. If your rubber roof is leaking we can inspect it at no cost and provide you with a free estimate of the repair costs. Our rubber roof repair will cost far less than a re-roof and last much longer. Metal roofs are another type of roof that presents a unique problem that makes them hard to patch. Metal roofs are usually low sloped roofs. Metal roofs rust and it becomes nearly impossible to seal the seams. If not properly cleaned and treated rust usually reappears and prevents conventional methods from adhering to it. The expansion and contraction from heat and cold causes the sealed joints of a metal roof to open and leak again. Roof Master Coating uses special rust inhibitors after cleaning the metal roof, and seals all seams before applying the Seamless Elastomeric coating. |

| Urban Heat Zones / Islands Installing cool roofing in Southern US cities can have significant positive impact on the environment as well. Urban Heat Zones are caused in part by a significant number of large dark colored roofs in urban areas that can reach extremely high temperatures. This macro heat effect from hot buildings and pavement causes smog, increased energy consumption and discomfort to building occupants . Cool roofing can help save the environment and save money. Many states offer utility discounts and rebates to building owners who install cool roofing. Approvals & Specifications It is virtually impossible to simply look into two pails of roof coating and predict whether one product is going to perform better than another does. For this reason, specific guidelines have been established for testing and approval of liquid-applied roof coatings that provide a yardstick that can measure all products. Products that meet specific standards display that information on the label. Facility owners and managers should look for such markings when evaluating a product to meet a specific need. Some markings indicate whether a coating meets specific standards or has the approval of certifying testing organizations. Among the important standards is American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D 6083. That standard measures the coating tested against specific physical performance and physical characteristics for viscosity, elongation, tensile strength, accelerated weathering after exposure to 1,000 hours of testing, permanence, water swelling, adhesion, tear strength, and low-temperature flexibility. If met, this comprehensive set of standards should lead managers to an excellent product. How long does a spray polyurethane foam (SPF) roof last? The oldest performing SPF roofs are over 30 years old. Because the physical properties of the SPF change little with age, how long the SPF roof system lasts depends primarily on the original application and long term maintenance. What are the advantages of SPF SPF has the highest R value of any insulation material because it's spray applied. It forms a seamless monolithic barrier that prevents air and water infiltration. SPF systems are referred to as "self flashing" because they can be applied to vertical surfaces such as parapet walls and roof penetrations in a contiguous manner, thus eliminating seams and cold joints, the main source of roof leaks. SPF systems can be applied quickly an safely without disruption to the facilities. In most re-roofing applications there is no need to tear off existing membranes, offering cost and logistics advantages. SPF Touted As " Green Building Material" Mason Knowles, Technical Director of The Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance delivered a paper on the use of roofing and Insulation at the University of Florida's Conference on Green Building Materials. SPF which has been used as a roofing and insulation material for over 30 years, has exhibited many characteristics that identify it as a "green" or "sustain-able" building material. Mr. Knowles' program highlighted the following SPF characteristics: The application of SPF will provide better climate control within a building envelope. Better climate control reduces the consumption of fossil fuels, thereby reducing green-house gases released into the air making polyurethane coatings ideal for commercial structures in the southern US . SPF provides a continuous air barrier, preventing moisture infiltration through air leakage, minimizing dew point problems and condensation within the building envelope, avoiding thermal bridging, resisting heat movement in all directions and providing reliable performance under varying conditions. By controlling moisture infiltration, SPF also provides greater durability to buildings. The number one cause of building deterioration is moisture within the building envelope. SPF's climate control ability enables a downsizing of the heating and cooling equipment of a building, further reducing energy usage. SPF Service Life There are no known end of service life figures for SPF. Generally, SPF shows little sign of deterioration or change in physical properties even after 30 years. SPF used as commercial or residential Insulation typically requires no long term maintenance. SPF can add structural integrity to a building's envelope. The National Association of Home Builders Research Center concluded after testing SPF in stud wall construction, that a structure braced with SPF filled walls will have less damage and permanent deformation of wall elements during a hurricane which makes all buildings in the southern US candidates. SPF roofing systems can be applied directly over BUR, modified bitumen, concrete, wood. Asphalt shingles, clay tile and metal. Since it adds very little weight, SPF is used as a recover system over existing roofs without the need for tear-off. This reduces the amount of construction debris in landfills. SPF roofs are renewable. With simple re-coats, the life of an SPF roof can be renewed indefinitely. SPF and Code Ratings Most SPF systems meet or exceed the minimum requirements established by various code and regulatory authorities. Following are some examples along with sources for further information. Underwriters Laboratories ANSI UL 263 is a Ions-term fire exposure test for building materials. It evaluates complete systems and offers reports of fire resistance values for specific periods of time. Listings for SPF systems can be found in the Underwriters Fire Resistance Directory under design. Copies may be obtained from SPFA by calling (800) 523-6154 and requesting AY 125. SPF roofing systems offer exceptional wind resistance because of their field spray application that provides full adhesion to substrates. No fasteners, battens, strips or heavy ballast is required. Wind uplift testing information is available from SPFA by requesting AY 124. Factory Mutual Research Corporation has a test method that combines many individual tests under one standard. This standard is called FM 4470 and evaluates roofing materials for listings as a Class I roof covering. The individual tests that are conducted on the SPF systems are: ASTM E-108. Roof Covering Flammability Test ASTM E-119. Calorimeter Fire Test Hail Resistance (Severe G Moderate) Foot Traffic Weathering Leakage Corrosion of Metal Components Listings for tested materials may be found in the FMRC Roofing Materials Approval Guide under the Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) roofing section.
